The Roman Road: The Way to Salvation

The Roman Road is a simple metaphor based on the Book of Romans in the New Testament, the Apostle Paul's longest and most comprehensive theological letter to the Church in Rome during the first century A.D. The Book of Romans contains much for the Church to learn and live but among the most important are teachings about man's profoundest need and God's greatest provision.

Our Greatest Need:
We must realize that we are sinners. Because of our sin a holy God cannot welcome us into His presence.

Romans 1:20-21: "Ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature, namely, his eternal power and deity, has been clearly perceived in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse; for although they knew God they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to Him, but they become futile in their thinking and their senseless minds were darkened."

Romans 3:23 "(Since) all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God."

EXPLANATION: The Scriptures teach that nothing we can do can or will allow God to see us as though we had no sin. We had no way of doing away with our sin. God, because of His holiness, couldn't simply overlook this separation. But, God, in His love wouldn't overlook the need for a solution either. He had compassion on us by offering a way, His way!

God's Greatest Provision:
God has provided the solution to our sin in Jesus Christ's sacrifice on the Cross

Romans 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Romans 5:8 "But God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

EXPLANATION: While we couldn't solve the problem of sin God could, and did! He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to take our sins on Himself. Only someone who is sinless Himself, only God Himself, could destroy sin and the resulting eternal death and separation from God.

Christ willingly visited earth to be our sacrifice Himself on the Cross as sinless God for sinful Man. Incredible isn't it? But, while we may "understand" this incredible story we may not actually believe it. That's the next step!

Acknowledge God's Solution:
We must agree (confess) with God that we are sinners and that Jesus Christ is our only means of receiving the gift of eternal life

Romans 10:9-10 "If you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For man believes with his heart and so is justified, and he confesses with his lips and so is saved."

Romans 3:24 "They are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Chrsit Jesus, whom God put forward as an expiation by His blood, to be received by faith."

Romans 10:13 For "everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved."

EXPLANATION: Sometimes in life the fear of what we will lose can seem greater than the benefits we can gain by obeying God. Jesus Christ promises that there is nothing greater to gain than eternal life and nothing greater to lose than our sin by obeying God's command to be saved through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the Cross.
